What’s on in the South Perth community

Spring is finally here – and there is no better place to spend everybody’s favourite season of the year than in the lovely City of South Perth. From the picturesque banks of our famous Swan River to its lush parks, sprawling reserves and natural wetlands, the City offers endless options for those who simply love being outdoors. But if it’s café culture, great food and boutique shops you seek, then the City has got you covered, too.

The City of South Perth is jam-packed full of wonderful places to discover and explore and is one of the state’s most loved destinations for local visitors and international tourists alike. Take a stroll through Sir James Mitchell Park along the foreshore, head towards Mends Street where you’ll find a mouth-watering selection of fantastic coffee and breakfast options, wander through Perth Zoo’s exciting exhibits or continue your exploration by delving into the rich history of South Perth with a visit to the Old Mill. There is no shortage of lunch options to choose from along Angelo Street – or the popular Preston Street precinct either, while the South Perth foreshore itself is the perfect place to unwind after a busy day, taking in sweeping river views across to Perth’s city skyline at the same time.

In terms of events and activities throughout the City over the coming months, you will find something for absolute everybody to enjoy, with all generations and all walks of life covered –the inaugural Intergenerational Storytime on September 17th a perfect example, with the free event at Collier Park Village in Como welcoming residents who will share the love of stories, rhymes, songs and craft. Both South Perth Library and Manning Library will also celebrate Australian Reading Hour 2019 throughout September, hosting a series of free events as part of a national initiative that is intended to encourage young, lapsed and committed readers alike to escape, relax, learn and experience the wonderful world of books.

Young sport lovers should head to Karawara’s George Burnett Leisure Centre in late September as the GBLC Junior Netball Extravaganza gets under way, where they can learn new skills and the basics of the game in a fun and interactive netball training session – including friendly round-robin-style games for children to put their new skills into action. For those already playing netball, this will be an afternoon of fun, games and activities not to be missed, with teams put together on the day according to age and skill.

On September 22nd, the Como Bowls and Recreation Club is holding a Family Fun Day that will include barefoot bowls, coaching, a sausage sizzle, cake stalls, tea and scones, books, bric-a-brac, plants and other stalls. Three days later, an ensemble from the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) will be gracing the South Perth Community Hall stage with an outstanding performance designed to entertain seniors aged 65 and over.

For lovers of arts and culture, the Old Mill Theatre on Mends Street is where you need to be from late September through to mid-October as Noël Coward’s “Present Laughter”
entertains the crowd on stage through a series of almost farcical events. If plays aren’t your thing, then perhaps the Rotary Club of Como’s Annual Car Show 2019 is where you would rather be on October 6th, where Wesley College plays host to 250 classic, vintage, exotic and luxury cars for the eighth successive year.

Get your best costumes on and head to the Manning Hub and Manning Library on October 31st to celebrate Halloween with a spooky scavenger hunt and – if you’re brave enough – Wild Adventure Storytime. The City of South Perth, together with the South Perth Returned and Services League (sub-branch) will also host a Remembrance Day Service on November 11th at the City of South Perth Memorial Gardens to commemorate those who have died and suffered in armed conflicts. All within the community are invited to join the service by laying floral tributes to honour fallen friends and relatives.

Be sure to tag us at #experiencebetter if you do happen to make your way to any of these fantastic local community events and remember that we want you to experience better in the City of South Perth – a truly amazing place to call home!
